“I’ve been assigned an extremely dangerous job to cross the triple line of enemy defense and go deep into the rear. Can you imagine? We were supposed to take a mined bridge over the Pilica River, 80 meters long. We had to keep it intact because our vehicles were supposed to pass over it afterwards.
The company soldiers attacked unexpectedly. With lightning speed they broke through to the bridge, destroying all three enemy lines. The soldiers moved to the opposite river bank, having killed those who served the battery which guarded the bridge. We approached the enemy in the dark, attacking with daggers, knives, hand-to-hand so as not to attract attention and not to call fire on the mined bridge. If the enemies had felt that such an important strategic object was in danger, they would have surely blown up the bridge. But It should have been preserved until our main forces arrived.
We didn’t seem strong enough but we weren’t going to give up our position. So we fought to the point when the riflemen came. We completed our mission: the bridge was preserved, our tanks moved over it with the infantry following."
