KANAMATOV KHAMIT ABULOVICH
The case story was provided by the Kh.B. Bairamukova State National Library of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic
A courageous son of the Karachays, future Captian, Khamit A. Kanamatov joined the army at the age of 18. Travelling the roads of war, he reached Berlin. In 1943, Kanamatov was recommended for the decoration „For Valour”, but didn’t receive it until 73 years later...
Khamit A. Kanamatov was born in the mountain village of Verkhniaya Mara in 1924.

When the war broke out, in order to get enlisted, Khamit, a second-year student, forged his documents: he changed his date of birth from August 1924 to March 1922. 17-year-old Akhmat was drafted by the Zelenchuk military commissariat and sent to the army sygnals college in Vladikavkaz. He studied there for 9 months and on June 5, 1942, he was commissioned into the 355th division as junior lieutenant. It took him 19 days to reach the destination and while he was on his way there, the division was destroyed.

Kanamatov was redirected to the Kalinin Front, the 357th artillery division, which was soon after encircled west of the city of Rzhev. On the 20th day Khamit and some other soldiers broke through the encircling. After the division was manned again, Khamit was assigned commander of the signals platoon stationed near the city of Velikiye Luki. Marshall Zhukov personally took command of the operation to assault and liberate the city and thereby open the way to the Novosokolniki railway station, a strategic site for our army.
In November 1943, in the offensive operations outside the village of Cherpukhino Khamit A. Kanamatov came under the enemy artillery barrage while repairing the telephone line between the units. Khamit was injured but stayed on the battlefield till the end of fighting. For the displayed courage Khamit A. Kanamatov was recommended for the government decoration – the medal „For Valour”. This took place on 6 November, 1943. However, three days earlier the government had issued a decree to carry out the deportation of the Karachays, Kanamatov’s people. Kanamatov wasn’t aware of the deportation, nor of the medal he was going to be granted, as he was treated for his wound at the hospital. To help him receive the medal „For Valour” Kanamatov was presented as a Koreen by the name of Khalib in his decoration certificate while the military commissariat in Zelenchuk in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, the place where he was drafted, was changed for „the Zelenchuk Military Commissariat of the Koreen Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic”.

Khamit A. Kanamatov didn’t return to his unit after the treatment – it was disbanded because of the high casualties. He was commissioned to another division. So the medal didn’t reach him until 73 years later. This episode when Kanamatov finally received the medal was described in two books; „Courageous Captain” and „In the Battles for Belarus” edited and brought out by specialists at the State National Library of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.

There were quite a few noteworthy episodes in Kanamatov’s life in the war years. He was a commander of the company in the signals corps of the Kalinin and First Baltic Fronts. He also fought at the third Belorussian Front. Travelling the roads of war, Khamit A. Kanamatov reached Berlin. He took part in the defense of Naro-Fominsk and in the assault operation nearby Novo-Sokolniki outside Velikiye Luki. He fought in Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia. Khamit A. Kanamatov took part in the liberation of Novorzhev, Daugavpils, Siauliai, Tilsit, Kanz, Koenigsberg.

Khamit A. Kanamatov was in the rank of Captain, in the 357th division, on the day of Victory.
When asked, „Which combat zone event do you remember most?”, Khamit Abdulovich answered with reserve:
"I remember practically everything well and, most of all, those days when we chased the enemy without rest up until the Hel Peninsula so that the Germans were unable to regroup. Finally, 112,000 Wehrmacht soldiers and officers were encircled and laid down their arms. That’s where I saw the Victory Day. I was happy to celebrate it, though not without a tinge of bitterness about my victimized people."
After WWII Khamit A. Kanamatov served in the Northern Military Force (Poland) until 1949 and in 1949 – 1952 in the Volga Military District.

In 1952 Khamit wrote a letter to Marshall of the USSR G. Vasilevsky:
„As long as my parents are under the control of the special commandant’s office as if they were criminals, I consider my service in the victorious Red Army politically erroneous!”
Following that, Khamit A. Kanamatov faced discharge from the army „for the reason of discrediting the distinguished title of an officer…
