PYOTR KARPOVICH IGNATOV (1894–1984)

Prose writer, member of the Union of Writers of the USSR, deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR

A big and difficult path was traversed by this man. Pyotr Karpovich Ignatov was born on 10 October 1894, in the city of Aleksandrovsk-Grushevsky (now the city of Shakhty), in the Rostov region, in a miner's family. After primary school, he enrolled to study as a ship mechanic at a school for marine motorists. The premature death of his father forced him to drop out of school and start working in a mechanical workshop. Later, the young man moved to Saint Petersburg, where he became close to the underground Bolsheviks and joined the Bolshevik party in 1913 actively working in the Bolshevik underground.

In 1923, the Ignatov family moved to Kuban. Working in various areas of economic construction Pyotr Karpovich graduated from the Moscow Institute of Forest Industry without interrupting his work. In 1940, he was appointed deputy director and later became the director of the Krasnodar Chemical Technology Institute.

The Great Patriotic War began. In August 1942, the fascists were approaching Krasnodar, and the threat of occupation hung over Kuban. In the Krasnodar region, 86 partisan detachments were formed. Pyotr Ignatov is assigned to create a partisan detachment of miners to fight against the Nazi invaders. Under the operational pseudonym «Father», he was appointed commander of this detachment. Along with him, his sons became partisans: engineer Yevgeny from the «Glavmargarine» factory and ninth-grade student Gennady (Genny), as well as his wife Elena Ivanovna.

V.A. Dombrovsky 'Poem about the Hero Brothers' (2000s)

Командир партизан был бесстрашный Пётр Карпыч Игнатов,

Большевик, каторжанин, носитель октябрьских идей,

Обожжён на гражданской был тифом и жаром снарядов,

На «гражданке» – строитель, учитель троих сыновей.

"We attacked in small groups, almost always the enemy's forces outnumbered ours by dozens. But if we were unable to eliminate the enemy before he regained his composure, we knew how to retreat in time. The escape routes were always known in advance to every participant in the attack. It would be extremely reckless not to take into account the turning point in the enemy's psyche when entering into a bayonet fight with the enemy with our small group…"

From the memories of Pyotr Karpovich Ignatov:
In one of the combat operations, both sons of Ignatov heroically died. The Motherland highly appreciated the feat of the fallen brothers. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 7, 1943, Yevgeny and Genny Ignatov were posthumously awarded the title of Heroes of the Soviet Union. Their names live on in the title of streets, ships, trains, schools and libraries. The Krasnodar Regional Children's Library is named after them. The "Ignatov Family Apartment" operates within the local history and country studies department of the library.

Pyotr Karpovich later described in detail the actions of his detachment and the feat of arms of his sons in his books: «The Life of a Simple Man», «Notes of a Partisan», «Our Sons», «Brothers-Heroes», «The Underground of Krasnodar». Ignatov has written a total of 17 books. His works have been translated into 16 foreign languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Hungarian, Chinese, Polish and others. He received many letters, including from abroad, from his readers.
Covers of books by P.K.Ignatov
The books by Ignatov are not just a family chronicle. These are primarily works in which the writer depicted the patriotic fervour of the Soviet people, who, from the youngest to the oldest, rose up to defend their country and saved their Homeland and the peoples of the world from fascism.

We all had a tremendous amount of work to do – we needed to restore everything that was destroyed by the Nazi occupiers. And people, who had recently fought with weapons in their hands against the enemy, once again took up peaceful, creative work.

I remember how the celebration awarding our partisans the Medal For Victory over Germany took place at the district party committee.
